Oasis Horticulture presents A Kitchen Garden In Every Blue Mountains Home
March 24, 2010
A Kitchen Garden in Every Blue Mountains Home, an initiative and major project of Cittaslow Katoomba Blue Mountains, aims to promote sustainability and self sufliciency by encouraging Blue Mountain residents to start a kitchen garden.
Cittaslow (Italian for Slow City) is derived from the Italian Slow Food Movement that has principles based on using local, seasonal produce, supporting small producers and restoring time-honoured methods of production. Katoomba Blue Mountains is one of only 100 Cittaslow villages world-wide.
By 2011 Cittaslow Katoomba Blue Mountains hopes that most homes will be growing their own leafy green vegetables. Not only does home-grown food taste better, it also helps to reduce the emissions that result from food production and transport thereby easing the local impact of climate change.
Past involvement by Oasis's Blue Mountains branch at Winmalee has included donation of vegetable seedlings s via giveaway vouchers redeemable from participating Blue Mountains nurseries.
